Washington State MS/JHS Individual Championship

February 7, 2004


Site:  Alderwood Middle School, 20000 28th Ave. W, Lynnwood, WA.  From south take I-5 and exit #181B (196th St. Exit in Lynnwood).  Go straight through first light at end of freeway ramp onto Alderwood Parkway.  Make right turn on 28th Ave. W (second light), and go south for appx. ¼ mile and school driveway will be on your right (it’s tucked back in the trees).   From north, take I-5 south and take the Lynnwood Exit and go east.  Drive over I-5 and take the first right. At the next light turn left. At the next light turn right onto 28th. Proceed approx. ¼ mile and school driveway will be on your right. Tournament is in cafeteria.  Lost – call (206) 794-6010.

Eligible:  Open to any student in grades 6-9.

Format:  Five rounds, computer-paired.  Two sections unless registrations warrant combining  into a single  section.  At present, the plan is for the Open Section to be for those rated 1000, and higher, but this can change. Determination to be made by the directors prior to the start of the tournament.  Any student, regardless of rating, can elect to play in the Open Section.

Schedule:  Register by mail, e-mail or FAX.  100% pre-registered tournament.  All pre-registered players must check in no later than 9 a.m. to play in the first round.  Players' meeting 9:20.  Rounds: 9:30, 11 a.m.; 1, 2:30, 4 p.m.  Awards by 5:15 p.m.

Time Control:  Game/30 (30 minutes per player per game), or G/25 with 5-second delay. Recording of moves required until one player has less than 5 minutes on the clock, then both players may stop recording.  Touch-move rules apply throughout entire game.

Rated:  Washington Scholastic Rating System (WSRS).  No memberships required.

Bring:  Sets, boards, clocks, writing utensils, competitive desire.  Please do not come unequipped to WHSCA tournaments!  Please make sure you bring enough sets for each player. 

Awards:  A generous set of trophies and medals will be awarded. Highest finisher in Open Section will be conferred the title of Washington State MS/JHS Champion.

Concessions:  There will be no concession sold on-site AND there is no fast food in easy walking distance.  PLAN AHEAD.  Bring your own food, or be prepared to drive 5 minutes or so. 

Advance Entries:  $8 per player, received by February 6th (or paid Saturday morning at check in).  No registrations on site.  FAX option: Coaches may register teams by FAX to 425-921-4040 through 6 p.m. Friday Feb 6th .  Payment in full for all faxed entries is due Sat a.m. before those players may compete.  Please use the entry form found elsewhere. NOTE:  Once again – no food on site – bring your own, don’t plan on Pizza or anything else being brought in for you.  It isn’t going to happen.  You will be very hungry if you don’t plan for this, so plan accordingly!
