Washington State Scholastic Action Chess Championship

Saturday January 10, 2003



Site: Edmonds-Woodway High School, 7600 212th Street SW, Edmonds, WA 98026. From I-5, take exit #179 (220th St. SW Exit) and proceed west on 220th St SW (towards Puget Sound). Cross Highway 99 and at the next light, 76th Ave NE, turn right (north) go past Stevens Hospital, and Edmond Woodway HS appears on the left. Park on south side of building. Lost call (206) 794-6010.

Eligible: Open to any student in grades 6-12

Format: Five rounds, computer-paired. Two sections in High School and two sections in MS/JHS unless registrations warrant combining into single sections for HS and a separate section for MS/JHS. At present, the plan is for the HS Open Section to be for those rated 1150, and higher, and the MS/JHS Open Section to be for those rated 1000, and higher; but this can change. Determination to be made by the directors prior to the start of the tournament.

Schedule: Register by mail, e-mail or FAX. 100% pre-registered tournament. All pre-registered teams must check in no later than 9 a.m. to play in the first round. Players' meeting 9:20. Rounds: 9:30, 11 a.m.; 1, 2:30, 4 p.m. Awards by 5:15 p.m.

Time Control: Game/30 (30 minutes per player per game) or G/25 with 5 second delay. Recording of moves required until one player has less than 5 minutes on the clock, then both players may stop recording. Touch-move rules apply throughout entire game.

Rated: Washington Scholastic Rating System (WSRS). No memberships required.

Bring: Sets, boards, clocks, writing utensils, competitive desire. Please do not come unequipped to WHSCA tournaments! Please make sure you bring enough sets for each player.

Awards: A generous set of trophies and medals will be awarded. Highest finisher in High School and Middle School/Junior High or equivalent programs will be awarded titles, HS Action Champion and JHS/MS Action Champion.

Concessions: The availability of food on site is uncertain. Plan to bring food or go to nearby fast food places.

Advance Entries: $8 per player, received by January 9th (or paid Saturday morning at check in). No registrations on site. FAX option: Coaches may register teams by FAX to 425-921-4040 through 6 p.m. Friday Jan. 9th. Payment in full for all faxed entries is due Sat a.m. before those players may compete.
